🌍 Location & Landscape: Situated in Sri Lanka's northwest coast lowland dry zone, spanning the North Western and North Central Provinces. The park's name derives from "Villu," referring to its defining feature—numerous natural, sand-rimmed freshwater lakes that fill with rainwater. Over 60 of these villus are scattered across the landscape, creating a mosaic of dense scrub forests, open glades, and wetlands that sustain the park's wildlife .
🐆 Wildlife Highlights: World-renowned for having one of the healthiest and most significant leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) populations in Sri Lanka . A comprehensive camera trap survey from 2018 identified 133 individual leopards in the surveyed area, estimating a density of 18 leopards per 100 km² . Other prominent mammals include elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar, water buffalo, and jackals .
